Seeing greener pastures in the land of Google , Yahoo ! may be looking to opt out of a search deal it brokered with Microsoft ’s search engine, Bing.

Yahoo! linked up with Microsoft as part of a 2009 agreement to allow the Redmond, Washington-based company to power its searches. Since web browsers prefer to have Google as their search engines, Yahoo!’s overall hold on the U.S. search market has dropped from over 14% to 11.8% over the past year, according to a report by research and analytics firm Trefis. 

For Yahoo! this is a big deal as search ads makes up approximately 14% of the company’s value and, though its search ad revenue has increased, its revenue per search metrics are below industry averages.

The 10-year deal, which went into effect in 2010, gives Microsoft 12% of the revenue Yahoo! generates from search ads that appear next to search results. The drop in market share has an opt-out clause that would allow either party to walk away from the agreement in mid 2015.

Yahoo!’s recent acquisition of Tumblr for $1.1 billion dollars, as well as a number of smaller deals that gave the company innovative staff and tech (think Summly) show that CEO Marissa Mayer is serious about bringing the company back to the relevance it enjoyed in previous years. If there’s a chance of improving its search and revenue generation by parting ways with Bing and partnering with Google’s search power, you’d better bet she’ll take it.

This is bad news for Microsoft as its market share has shown an increase of 1.6% due to its deal with Yahoo!

Yahoo! might also beef up its own search products but, according to Trefis analysts, that could take time and time costs money and market share.
